Ingredients:
How to make Indian Paratha (Step-by-Step process)
Preparing the Dough
-
In a large mixing bowl, take 200g of whole wheat flour. Add a little salt, and if you like, you can also add 1 tablespoon of carom seeds for an extra burst of flavor.
Adding Carom seeds is completely optional.
-
Gradually add warm water, a little at a time, and mix it into the flour. Keep adding water until the dough comes together.
-
Once the dough begins to form, knead it gently for 5-7 minutes until it is soft but not sticky, adjusting with extra flour or water if needed; then add 2 tbsp of oil, knead until smooth and stretchy, and set it aside to rest for 15-20 minutes, which will make it softer and easier to roll.
Tips: The resting time for the dough is key to getting soft and flaky parathas, so don’t skip it!
Shape the Parathas
-
Once the dough has rested, divide it into small, equal-sized portions, roughly the size of a golf ball.
-
Take a dough ball, sprinkle it with a little flour, and roll it into a small circle, about 6-7 inches across. It doesn't have to be perfect – the flavor is what matters!
-
Once you’ve rolled out a thin circle, brush a light layer of oil (or ghee) on top.
If you want a layered effect, you can brush oil in between the folds, roll it out, and repeat the process. The more folds, the more crispy layers you’ll get. -
Fold the circle in half to form a semi-circle, then fold that semi-circle in half again to make a triangle shape. Press the edges gently to seal the folds.
-
Lightly dust the triangle with flour and roll it out again gently into a triangle shape, keeping the thickness even.
Cook the Parathas and Serve
-
Heat a tawa or non-stick pan over medium-high heat, then place the rolled triangular paratha on it and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface.
-
Flip the paratha and cook the other side for 1-2 minutes until golden brown spots appear. Then, brush the top with a little oil (or ghee) and flip it again, pressing gently with a spatula. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until both sides are crispy and golden.
Keep your tawa at a medium heat – too high, and the paratha might burn; too low, and it won’t crisp up nicely. -
Once your Tawa Triangular Parathas are crispy and golden brown, serve them hot with any veg or non-veg curries such as Chicken Curry, Mutton curry, Dal Tadka.
